The Federal Pell Grant Program assists eligible student by providing help in meeting the cost of postsecondary education. To be eligible, a student must meet the following criteria: (1) establish financial need (2) be enrolled in an eligible program (3) be a U.S. citizen or in the U.S. for other than a temporary purpose and intend to become a permanent resident or be a permanent resident of the Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands.

Federal Pell Grant This is a non-repayable, federally funded grant for undergraduate students only. Pell grant awards vary in amounts each year and are based on financial need
and hours of enrollment. For undergraduate students who have received full-time Pell awards for Fall and Spring semesters, there is no remaining Pell Grant for the summer semester.

Loans

Low interest loans for undergraduate and graduate students, with maximum loan limits per year are as follows:

  • $3,500 for first year undergraduates
  • $4,500 for second year undergraduates
  • $5,500 for students who have completed two years of study to a total of $23,000 as an undergraduate
  • $8,500 for graduate and professional school students to a total of $65,500 including funds borrowed as an undergraduate

If eligible, independent students may borrow additional money through the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program as follows:

  • First and second year independent undergraduates may borrow up to an additional $6,000 in unsubsidized loans if eligible.
  • Third and fourth year independent undergraduates may borrow up to an additional $7,000 in unsubsidized loans if eligible.
  • Graduate and professional students may borrow up to an additional $12,000 in unsubsidized loans if eligible.

Federal Subsidized Loan

This loan is based on need, interest is not charged on this loan while the student is in school or deferment.

Federal Unsubsidized Loan

This loan is not awarded on the basis of need; interest accrues until the loan is paid off.

Federal PLUS Loans. Federal PLUS Loans are for parents to assist with payment of education expenses for sons and daughters. These loans provide additional funds for education expenses and are not need-based. Funds are provided by banks, credit unions, or savings and loan associations. Each year parents may borrow up to the cost of education less financial aid.

How to apply for Financial Aid

  • Complete a FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid) here. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ UAHuntsville School Code: 001055
  • Once UAHuntsville has received the FAFSA, if additional information is needed, applicants are notified by the Office of Student Financial Services
